Expectation for Screening for All Students and Visitors

Expectation for Screening for All Students and Visitors

DPSCD Staff, Students, and Families,

To protect the children and adults in our school community, all students and visitors entering school buildings will be subject to screening. Screening measures may include metal detection, bag inspection, and other security procedures as determined by each school. These measures exist to keep our schools safe, and we are committed to carrying them out in a way that is fair, consistent, and respectful for everyone.

When entering the building, all students and visitors should proceed through designated screening locations and follow the directions of safety staff. All bags are subject to inspection as a routine part of entry. Bag inspections may include a visual inspection of all compartments, the movement of items within the bag, and inspection of containers or other items found inside. Additional screening methods may be used, as needed.

Our safety screenings are focused specifically on items that could pose a threat to school safety, including weapons, firearms, knives, ammunition, or explosive devices. Any dangerous or prohibited items found during screening will be reported immediately to school administration and documented in accordance with the District's safety protocols. Staff are not permitted to review personal diaries or journals, private written communication, the contents of personal electronic devices, personal identification documents, personal hygiene items, or medical information. Any personal items encountered incidentally will be handled discreetly.

Staff will conduct all screenings calmly, professionally, and without singling anyone out. We are committed to ensuring that every student and visitor is treated with dignity throughout the process.
